Chicken Karma

As a die hard fan of curry I must admit that when I saw this open access article in the British Medical Journal it made my mouth water. Researchers in China have conducted an observational study which shows an inverse correlation between the consumption of spicy foods and mortality. People who ate spicy food on at least 6 days per week were found to be 14% less likely to die than those who ate it once or less per week.

They followed half a million people for 7 years and found specifically that those with a taste for spicy foods were less likely to die from cancer, ischemic heart disease and respiratory diseases; the effect was seen in both men and women.

As this is purely an observational study it is not possible to say that there is a cause and effect relationship at work here, indeed the authors were at pains to point this out. They did, however, control for age, education, sex, BMI, and everything else their data set allowed them to. They weren't fully able to control for socioeconomic status and this could certainly have an effect as, sadly, one of the strongest predictors of your health and wellbeing is the size of your bank balance. They also mentioned the possibility of reverse causality; perhaps people who are very ill and close to death avoid spicy foods.

So, no smoking gun, but there is a growing body of papers like these that show various protective benefits associated with the consumption of spicy food and it would appear to merit some more functional studies to try and isolate potential mechanisms. In the meantime, pass the poppadoms.

365 Project: Photo 302

It's pretty much Halloween, that most awful of made up nonsense 'holidays', and so it's time to get the pumpkins out. This was my best effort, which wasn't great, but did the job. As you can probably tell I have darkened this somewhat and grunged it up.

365 Project: Photo 247

It's not often, these days, that I have a dinner made for me and so this was a rare treat, especially considering it was a home made curry. If you look back through the blog you'll notice that I don't do pictures of food; I don't really get it and I'm not very good at it. Given that the theme was Indulge Yourself, and this was made by a kindly work colleague, I thought I'd set it down for the record. Cheers, Tina.

365 Project: Photo 092

I made a bread. Today's theme was Strut and I guess I'm quite proud of this loaf. It's my second attempt doing it completely by hand and from scratch; the first was edible but didn't look great; this one was awesome even if I do say so myself. This reminds me of a quote from the legendary Carl Sagan: To make an apple pie from scratch you must first create the universe.

365 Project: Photo 066

The theme was Breakfast and eggs are a personal favourite. Boiled or fried are my favourite, so long as the yolk is good and runny.

A Cup of _____; that was the theme. I can't stand coffee and I don't really drink tea but I do love a hot chocolate. Voila.

The theme today was Sweet Treats. I didn't have much to work with so this is it. Soz.

365 Project: Photo 049

Okay, I'm back on topic today, the topic being Favourite Snack. Here are a couple of personal faves from the pub; chilli, corny puff things and pork scratchings. I bloody love pork scratchings.

365 Project: Photo 005

Today it got to about 5pm and taking a photo hadn't even occurred to me; great to see I still have that Killer Instinct. For those using the CaptureYour365 prompts then today's suggestion was food, however, I had already eaten. But then Sue said she was going to do some baking - back in the game! I had no intention of taking a shot of whatever the final product would be, I totally don't get the taking photos of your food phenomenon, it bores me to tears. The process is far more interesting, that's when stuff actually happens; for example, melted chocolate being poured into the beaten sugar and butter. I have no idea what this will be, it's still in the oven as I post this, some sort of cake I'd imagine; it certainly smells amazing.....
